Short story writer Ted Chiang and writer-producer Eric Heisserer are teaming up for the first time since their Oscar-winning collaboration, Arrival.
Heisserer produced the 1991 adaptation of Chiang’s story, Division by zerowhose rights have been scooped up by Luma Features, the longtime visual effects company now pushing development and production.

Henry Dunham, who made his feature film debut at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival with the well-received thriller The Impasse at Sparrow Creekwill write the screenplay by adapting the original work and will direct the project.
Heisserer will produce under his Chronology banner, alongside Luma’s Payam Shohadai, Grady Gamble and Kyle Franke. Carmen Lewis of Chronology will executive produce. Franke will oversee production for Luma, which will fund development and production.
Zerooriginally appeared in Full Spectrum 3 Charger, chronicles what happens when the math no longer matches, once a math teacher discovers that 1 = 0. The revelation upends the universal foundation of math and society and ultimately the foundation of her relationship with her husband .
“Ted’s writing resonates with me, compels me to revisit his stories regularly,” Heisserer noted in a statement. “Division by zero was among my favorites, but I didn’t see how it could live on as an adaptation until Henry and I talked about it at length as mutual fans. I’m so excited to collaborate with Ted again and see Henry’s vision for this moving story come to life with the creative support of the artists at Luma.
Luma is a 20-year-old creative studio that got its start in visual effects, most recently working on films such as Tomorrow’s War, King Richard and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings as well as in the live events space. He is now making inroads into his own productions and is currently in charge of his first original film, The silence of mercy. Made in partnership with The Blast List Productions, the film is directed by Floria Sigismondi (runaways, The Handmaid’s Tale) and stars Annabelle Wallis and Raffey Cassidy.

Heisserer is the creator of the Netflix fantasy series, shadow and boneas well as the author of the Netflix hit, bird box. It earned a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for Arrivalthe sci-fi thriller directed by Denis Villeneuve.
Dunham is replaced by UTA, Anonymous Content and Stephen Clark from Lichter, Grossman. Chiang is replaced by WME and Janklow Nesbit.
