DAYTON – A film production company announces that it will set up its headquarters in Dayton. People involved in the film industry say this is a game-changer for the local film industry.

1913 Studios said it has already purchased a facility on Springfield Street that exceeds 200,000 square feet.

Greater Dayton Area Film Commissioner Lisa Grigsby said the studio specializes in smaller films.

“They know they’ll have a lot of first-time producers and stuff,” Grigsby said.

Some of these new producers may come from Wright State University’s Motion Picture Program. Jeremy Bolden, a film production instructor at WSU, told News Center 7’s Candace Price that this relates to what he tells his students.

“We tell our students all the time that you don’t have to be in Los Angeles or New York or Atlanta to work in movies, to do substantial things,” Bolden said.

Two of the studio’s founders have roots in Dayton and that’s why, Grigsby said, they understand its value.

“Things are so affordable here and [the] the work ethic of people in the Midwest is incredible,” Grigsby.

Grigsby told News Center 7 that the studio will also impact the local economy.

“They will rent cars. They will buy coffee. They will eat at our local restaurants,” Grigsby said.

The studio, Grigsby said, will also bring in more jobs because of the number of people needed to run a film set properly.

The current schedule for opening this studio will be the end of 2023.
