With upcoming releases planned with Christina Milian, Tyga, and Waka Flocka Flame, Darko is the hot new squad you should watch out for. This Los Angeles-based production and DJ collective is newly formed, but not new to the music scene. They’re creating some of the hottest tracks for 2019 and beyond.
Darko has just released a new track with Destructo and Ice-T titled scammer. This song will pump you up for the week. Be sure to listen if you haven’t already.
During Miami Music Week, we chatted with a member of Team Darko and singer Mahkenna, the two of whom recently collaborated on a track called Ready for love. See below to learn more about Darko and their crazy upcoming projects.
DMNW: Darko: it’s one of the new names on the scene. For those who may not know you, how would you describe your style of music?
Darko: It’s dark, trap, big drops – that was the style I was looking for. I wanted to have a trap, dirty sound. How about Mahkenna?
Mahkenna: It’s almost an umbrella of its kind because it’s not necessarily just trap. He darko-trusts every artist Darko chooses. They could be rappers, singers, whatever. You put them on the track, and they all sound the same. Honestly, you have to hear it to understand.
DMNW: Looks like you get a lot of influence out of hip-hop. You use a lot of hip-hop in your songs, we noticed that …
Darko: The releases currently coming out: the record with Riff Raff, the one with Mozzi, the DMX rework, the record with Mahkenna-Ready for Love, which is not a rap record. I also dropped the record with Destructo, and Ice-T, the Hustler record – which is a G-House record.
The Hustler record came out of the wheelhouse of the Darko sound a bit. Ice-T is a friend of mine, and I thought it would be pretty cool to have him on a dope dance record!
Because of Ice-T’s style, G-House made sense. So when I started Destructo, I was like “Hey, do you want to come on this album with Ice?” He was like “yeah, absolutely!”.
The stuff we put out is dark, downtempo, trap stuff. We have a record that we’re releasing with Christina Milian in April. We also have a handful of remixes for that. It’s a little different. It’s probably the band’s most pop album. The main version of the song is, like, ’90s house!
DMNW: You mentioned Ice-T, and how you are a friend of his. Ice-T is a name that covers all genres of music. How is he in person?
Darko: Ice is one of the coolest guys; He is so smart! He spits out the craziest game. If you follow him on Twitter, his daily game posts, they’re all so awesome! They are all something that you can relate to, and it is like that. He’s super cool, super cool …
You have a conversation with him, and he puts you on the line.
Mahkenna: It’s like a motivational speaker, but he’s a rapper!
DMNW: We’re still in early 2019. What can fans expect from Darko this year, going forward?
Darko: Lots of music! Every month we have a new version that we release. In the summer, we’re going to start hitting the festival world, performing, and going out.
We are doing a residency in Los Angeles. We just had a club that has 3,000 people. We’ll do a monthly there and kick off something cool, like a Darko themed party.
Mahkenna: I was in the studio with Darko, I was just working on new stuff. So we have more to come. It’s called Ready for Love. It is available on all platforms. The next one we have …
Darko: This is called Ready for Cuddles. We’re doing the remix! It’s going to be called Ready for Cuddles …
Mahkenna: Noooooon, ready for love!
Darko: No, the remix! Alright, just kidding.
But yeah, we’ve got a bunch of cool stuff going on. More music to come with Mahkenna. Christina Milian’s record, one with Waka Flocka. I have one with Juicy J, which I just finished. It’s a handful of cool shit coming up!
