HYBE’s Apprentice A Production Team And Apprentice Leo Apologize For Offensive Lyrics

HYBE Trainee A’s production team and trainee Leo have both formally apologized for the recent controversy regarding his rap lyrics.

Leo, who is best known for his brief appearance in BTS’s music video for “Permission to Dance,” is one of HYBE’s Trainee A trainees – a team of six trainees that many have speculated to be of the new boy group that Big Hit Music plans to debut in 2022.

Leo recently came under fire for a video posted on Trainee A’s official YouTube account titled ‘Showdown’ in which he took part in a rap battle.

The 19-year-old trainee, from Australia, personally wrote his own English lyrics for the battle – and many were alarmed by some of the lines in his rap, which were criticized for being misogynistic and offensive to women, such that “Nobody gon’ tell me why that female dog stopped breathing / fuck that hoe in my bank / yeah that shit stopped breathing / tell that female dog / took that female dog to the store / nobody gon’ tell me why that female dog stopped breathing.”

On December 29, after deleting the video in question, Trainee A’s production team posted the following apology on their official YouTube account in English:

Hello.

This is Trainee Content Production Team A.

We would like to express our sincere apologies for the inappropriate lyrics in the “Leo’s SHOWDOWN” video uploaded to the Trainee A YouTube channel in October.

We sincerely apologize for not recognizing the seriousness of the issue and posting a video with inappropriate content. After acknowledging the problem, we decided to remove the video.

We would also like to apologize to anyone we have caused pain and distress to because of the lyrics in question. We will exercise caution when creating content.

We will be vigilant to ensure that every intern, including Leo, fully understands issues around diversity and respect so they can be more mindful of their actions and words.

We will also make sure to be more attentive to your advice and we will continue to strive to create better content.

We would like to once again apologize to anyone who may have felt pain and distress because of the video of Trainee A.

The team also released the following apology in English from Leo:

Hello. It’s Leo.

I would like to sincerely apologize to everyone who was offended by the lyrics posted in the first episode of SHOWDOWN.

Since it was a contest, I felt like I needed to use more provocative words and phrases to make an impact. This ultimately led me to make an extremely bad decision in which I feel very embarrassed. I had absolutely no intention of offending or degrading anyone, but my words and thoughts were very immature and I deeply apologize.

I kept thinking about my mistakes, and after watching the video again, I feel extremely embarrassed and ashamed of my performance. Although I can’t go back, I realize it was entirely my fault and I will strive to do whatever it takes to reflect and learn from my mistakes.

Again, to anyone who felt offended by my inappropriate actions and words, I sincerely apologize. I will take this opportunity to reflect and reflect on more positive and mature ways to express myself through my music.
