In December 2020, we got the surprise announcement during Disney Investor Day that Marvel was working on a new animated series called I am Grootfeaturing the vocal talents of Wine Diesel and directed by the animator Kirsten Lepore.
Marvel said that “The series of shorts follows Baby Groot’s glory days growing up.” In March of this year, an extract from I am Groot from Disney’s annual shareholders meeting has appeared online, featuring baby Groot in a classic photorealistic animation style.

Otherwise, details on the Phase Four project have been surprisingly thin. Some of this is likely since the project is animated – you won’t get any photos from this type of project. So what are we left with? Production Companies.
Earlier this week, we filled in the blanks for some of Marvel’s mysterious LLCS and revealed the working title and production company for the upcoming one. Blade movie starring Mahershala Ali. And earlier this year, we revealed new information about the production company behind by Kathryn Hahn Agatha: House Harkness show among other things.
Now we are exclusively able to do the same with another mysterious production company: Log Jam Productions, LLC. This company was originally revealed, along with others, by Arlyn Murphy of Murphy’s Multiverse Last year.
Based on our reliable sources, we can now confirm what some have been guessing for a while now – I am Groot uses the production company Log Jam Productions, LLC. We have also learned and confirmed that the working title or codename of the project is “Lone Pine.”
While we heard that this is currently only a one-season project, like many things in the Marvel Universe, which could change. We’ll be keeping an eye out for any further indications that this may continue past the first season.
When I am Groot to be freed?
We know that I am Groot is planned to be released in 2022. There may be a hint on the release date in an upcoming Funko release. According to Amazon, I am Groot will have a Funko Collector Corps box. Amazon says it will ship between May 28 and June 6 this year.
Traditionally, Collector Corps boxes are timed to release with new shows or special events. If the box actually ships at the end of May, we might see I am Groot on Disney+ very soon.
Because Funko’s production has a long lead time, their planned release has long been a source of story clues and unexpected characters in the MCU. For example, The cosmic circus recently reported on the new Ms. Marvel Funkos hinting at an interesting heroic cameo in the upcoming series.
Speculations on Baby Groot and its history
Groot first appeared in a comic in Tales to Astonish #13 in 1960. But the character has grown in popularity since first appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy.
Tragically, “Old” Groot sacrificed himself during the Battle of Xandar in that same movie. But the “new” Groot was born from a twig that Rocket rescued from the remains of the old Groot. We’ve watched the new Groot grow from adolescence and seen him with a teenage attitude to boot. Groot’s progression as he grows up seems to continue.

A much leaner Groot appears in the new Thor: Love and Thunder trailer for a brief moment as well. So it will be interesting to see why it looks so different between Thor: Love and Thunder and the next GotG Holiday special and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
So, back to Baby Groot. Because Groot is expanded into the latest MCU timeline, we’re going to take the logical leap that I am Groot will take place between the end of the first guardians of the galaxy movie and Avengers: Infinity War. This means the blip hasn’t happened yet and there are still plenty of Guardian adventures to come.
We don’t know much about Groot’s MCU origins, but maybe the production’s working name, “Lone Pine” can give us some insight.
During the 2007-2008 campaign Annihilation: Conquest comics, we find out that Groot is the last surviving member of his species, called the colossi Flora. They are from Planet X. Interestingly, last year, Wine Diesel suggested that we might see the planet, once called Taluhnia, in I am Groot.
The gang visiting Groot’s homeworld seems like an exciting place to explore from a story perspective. Earlier this year, storyboards suggesting Guardians interaction surfaced online. storyboard artist Marc Hurtado posted an art set on ArtStation featuring Drax and Baby Groot.
It’s also possible that this show takes place long before Groot and the Guardians cross paths. The show could cover the original Baby Groot and why he left home.
For the time being, The cosmic circus the team is monitoring things with I am Groot. If you haven’t had your fill of Marvel and want to dive deeper into some of the story universes, check out some of our other articles on the site.
Besides, I wouldn’t be surprised if my homie Wine (do not Diesel) is offering a guide to reading Groot comics later this year. In the meantime, check out some of his other fantastic reading guides as well.
