President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground production company have joined Sam Esmail’s team for the next Netflix movie Leave the world behind. The film is an adaptation of the original book, which was on one of Barack Obama’s suggested reading lists.
Esmail adapted the screenplay for the October 2020 book which received critical acclaim as a 2020 National Book Awards finalist and was awarded Best Book of the Year by The Washington Post, Esquire, Time, and more.
The dystopian film has an impressive cast list consisting of Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke and Myha’la Herrold.
“Amanda and Clay head to a remote corner of Long Island in anticipation of a vacation: a quiet respite from New York life, quality time with their teenage son and daughter, and a taste of the good life. in the luxurious house they’ve rented for the week,” the teaser reads. “But a late-night knock on the door breaks the spell. Ruth and GH are an older couple – it’s their home and they’ve arrived in a panic. They bring the news that a sudden blackout has swept through the town. But in this rural area – with TV and internet now down and no cell phone service – it’s hard to know what to believe.
Production on the film is already underway and is expected to be released in early 2023.
