Residents called for the lighting to stay on after crews finished filming at the end of May and those calls received support from councilors, including Ward Councilor Rob Yates.

It has now been confirmed that Neal Street Productions plans to give Margate the spotlight. An offer has been made to the Kent Film Office who will liaise with representatives from Thanet and Kent councils.

Pippa Harris of Neal Street Productions said: “From the first moment we discussed the lighting of the festoon along the promenade, we always hoped to bring the lights to the city.

“We have received such a warm welcome and so much support from the people of Margate that we would love for the lights to remain and be something that will be enjoyed by the town and its visitors for years to come.”

Eddie Kemsley, CEO of Dreamland, said: “When we started our conversations with Neal Street Productions about this incredible film coming to Margate, we discussed how this project could leave a lasting beneficial legacy for the town. .

“The string lights hung throughout the parade not only sparked positive conversations, but literally lit up our beautiful waterfront and so we’re thrilled they’ll continue to do so after filming wraps.

“There’s still work to do and a long way to go with the practicalities, but we’re sure the whole community will join us in thanking Neal St Productions for their generous donation.”

Cllr Yates said: “On behalf of the residents of Margate Central, I would like to say a huge thank you to Sam Mendes, the production company and Dreamland for their support in donating these lights to Margate.

“I am confident that together we can resolve any technical issues around light levels, maintenance and the cost of running the lights, just as Westgate Town Council manages the town center Christmas lights.

“I know Margate residents and businesses will be delighted and I think it will make people feel safer at night along our seafront. Let there be light!”

Thanet Council was asked to comment.
