Sony Pictures Entertainment acquires VFX, the virtual production company Pixomondo


Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) has acquired Oscar- and Emmy-winning virtual production, visualization and visual effects company Pixomondo.


  • Under the terms of the agreement, Sony now owns 100% of Pixomondo, which joins Sony Pictures Imageworks and Sony Innovation Studios to expand the company’s vfx and virtual production capabilities. Sony was particularly attracted to Pixomondo’s virtual production capabilities and sees the acquisition as helping to reinforce “Sony’s role as one of the leaders in virtual production”.
  • Over the course of two decades, Pixomondo has grown its vfx services to cover animation, digital assets, characters and creatures, compositing, crowd simulation, environments and world building, layout, l lighting, rigging and roto. Current productions featuring Pixomondo’s work include Prime Video’s The boysHBO Max Dragon HouseParamount+ Star Trek: Strange New Worldsas well as upcoming features such as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Mathilde the musicaland The magic flute.
  • SPE has acquired vfx from Mayfair Equity Partners, a consumer and technology investment firm. The terms of the contract are not disclosed.
  • Pixomondo will maintain three LED sound stages and seven offices in the US, UK, Germany and Canada. The acquisition comes just weeks after Sony Innovation Studios unveiled its first LED sound stage at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City.
  • Pixomondo CEO Jonny Slow will continue his role with the company, reporting to SPE President of Global Television Studios and Corporate Development, Ravi Ahuja.
  • In a statement, Ahuja said, “Pixomondo’s impressive end-to-end virtual production technology, software and solutions further reinforce Sony’s leadership in high-quality visual effects and virtual production. And, for our TV studios, Pixomondo’s capabilities will make the hundreds of shows we produce for our streaming and network partners even more exceptional.
