Toontrack Superior Drummer 3: Giant Drums Production Studio
The people at toontrack know what musicians want – after all, the business only started because founders Mattias Eklund and Henrik Kjellberg wanted to create great-sounding digital drums for their own projects. That was over twenty years ago, and they’ve spent time building a virtual instrument empire ever since, changing the game with releases like EZdrummer and its beloved menagerie of expansions. One of their standout products, with an insane library size of 235 GB, is among the most successful plugins in any category: Toontrack Upper Beater 3.
The third installment in the series, Superior Drummer 3 completely eclipses its predecessors in both size and scope. The aforementioned library justifies its huge size with seven different and customizable drum kits, 14 kit setups, 16 kicks, 25 snares, 32 cymbals and around 350 electronic drum machine-style sounds – and these are not than the batteries themselves. You can mix and match them to create your own ideal kit, or stack several together (for example, creating a kick drum sound from several individual kick drums) to achieve rich, distinctive sounds you wouldn’t get with a single battery. The attention to detail is extraordinary for some kits, you can even choose to replace the typical sticks with brushes, rods and felt mallets for additional acoustic possibilities.
Conceived by the heroic George Massenburg (whose CV is too big to include here), Superior Drummer 3 has been expertly crafted and, in turn, gives you the best possible tools to shape your sound. Tuning, envelope, and velocity parameters allow you to tweak your drum sounds from the source; a powerful 35-effect mixer lets you sculpt the mix any way you want. The groove grid offers a fast and intuitive way to program, and the amazing AI-enabled “Tracker” feature lets you drop in your recorded drum audio material and convert it to MIDI. Whether you want to tweak and enhance pre-existing sounds or create fascinating new ones, this great software will go as until your creativity is ready to take it. The Superior Drummer 3 configuration also includes eleven additional room microphones configured in a surround configuration, for use in any system, from stereo all the way up to 11.1 systems.
Toontrack Superior Drummer 3 is available on the official company website– regular purchases (i.e. for those who don’t already own a version of Superior Drummer 2) will be $399, while those who are “crossgrade” eligible will pay $319.
