Playlist will feature 13 shows this year, the webseries production studio announced on Monday.
The first was the black series “Hope or Dope”, which was launched on the video streaming platform Seezn on March 25. The story follows an 18-year-old girl, played by actor Won Ji-an, who hides out in the countryside after being used as a drug mule by her parents. She meets a local boy, played by actor Yoon Chan-young, and his friends, and discovers a field of marijuana plants.
“Newnormalzine,” a series about female online magazine editors, will launch in the first half of 2022. Other series, including the romantic comedy “While You Are Drunk” (translated), the fantasy “World Cup Baby ” and “Unfollow” on Instagram’s star influencers, will follow. The studio is currently in negotiations to find out which streaming platform will distribute them.
Several series will be based on Naver Webtoons and web novels, such as “Weak Hero”, “Seasons of Blossom”, “Secret Playlist”, “Back to You” and “Deal” (translated).
A romantic series titled “From Somenam to Getnam” (translated) will select 10 episodes from famous web novel authors and recreate them into a single series.
“This is the year that Playlist started to officially introduce original content and well-made medium-to-long dramas,” production studio CEO Park Tae-won said. “This will be the first year that Playlist becomes not just a series production company, but a full studio.”
Playlist was founded in 2017 by Naver Webtoon and Snow, a software subsidiary of Naver. She has 14.9 million subscribers worldwide.
